Comments about Bretford Adjustable Height Dual Arm for Small Flat Panel Desk Mounts:
This is the "heavy duty" version of the mount. It is a very poor match for my 23" Apple CinemaHD Display. The display is constructed of a beautifully machined brushed aluminum. This mount is described as having a "powder coated aluminum finish" and in photographs appears to be a somewhat shiny silver. Unfortunately it's a rather pedestrian battleship gray. I cannot imagine this finish would complement any display. The contrast between the mount and the display is so stark I'm happy the display is large enough to hide the mount.
But I bought a mount for two reasons: a) to get things up and off my desk, and b) to allow more flexibility in moving and positioning my display. While this mount does allow one to free up some desk real estate by relocating the display support, it does not simplify the task of positioning the display. The mount's joints are so stiff I find it impossible to reposition the display while seated. Positioning the display/mount requires both hands while standing next to the desk to individually adjust each joint while keeping the mount from rotating in its base. The only adjustment that does not require both hands is the rotation, which has no horizontal or vertical detent. It is so easy to move the display, if it weren't for the monitor cable you could spin your display like a propeller. As it is, even the slightest touch or any movement of the mount results in a display that is no longer horizontal.
The product description mentions 14" of vertical adjustment. This is obviously an error. Out of the box, the mount's arm is fully extended to its maximum height and rests in the base at a 45 degree angle to the surface of the desk. While it would appear to allow for some additional lift it does not - the maximum clearance between the desk surface and lower edge of my 23" display is seven inches. It does allow for one to LOWER the display, however. Lower than the surface of the desk, in fact, but not the direction I would find useful. If you are not careful you could smash an expensive display into your desk quite easily. This is obviously a mount designed for an earlier era when 12"-16" displays were the largest available. The vertical adjustment has an unexpected feature in that any downward movement (causing compression of the internal gas cylinder) is accompanied by much squeaking and creaking - an alarm which might be enough to cause you to stop moving the display in this direction and save it from crashing into your desk. Finally, cable management for this mount is truly a laughable engineering oversight consisting of flimsy plastic clips that don't stay in place - made even worse by the bizarre remedy of (included) adhesive velcro strips.
I expected better of a display mount in this price range. This is a horrible product I regret buying. After much online searching for advice on how to deal with this mount's foibles I can only conclude that anyone searching for a mount for a medium to large computer display would be better served (and save a fair amount of money) by buying the ErgotronMX or something similar.
